What Is Microsoft Excel?

Microsoft Excel is known as a spreadsheet application. A spreadsheet allows you to manipulate numeric data. You can perform calculations as well as analysis and forecasting. So what is Microsoft Excel going to allow you to do? Essentially it will allow you to perform a range of spreadsheet associated tasks.

When you load up Excel you are presented with a grid like page. This is known as a worksheet. All of your information will be held here. Many worksheets make up a workbook. The grid is made up of a series of rows and columns and data is entered in individual cells. You can then for example multiply the value in one cell by the value in another cell. All kinds of mathematical functions can be applied to the cells.

What Is Microsoft Excel Used for? Well, you can create a spreadsheet for something simple such as keeping track of your monthly outgoings. By doing this you can keep a running total of exactly how much you are spending each month.

Alternately, you may be working in a business environment and have more serious uses for Excel. In this case your spreadsheet applications can become complex and a good deal of understanding is required here. Engineering is another good example of a business situation where more complex spreadsheets are required.

You can apply mathematical functions to your data. This could be something simple as summing a column of data or something more complex such as quantitative analysis.

Excel also allows you to create a database, although this is not so common among users and developers. You would be better off using something related to database storage such as Microsoft Access.

Because Excel is part of the MS Office suite of programs it can communicate with other applications in the suite. For example, you may want to transfer your Excel data into MS Access or vice versa.

Excel is an extremely powerful tool which is useful for both home and business.
