The red ring of death is a process that your malfunctioning Xbox 360 results to, to signify that you have a faulty system. Around the parameters of the power button there are 4 lights, that when work properly, will signify an active controller by showing a green light. If there are any faults with your console, you could see as little as one light show red instead of green. This problem could increase to as many as four red lights at a time. Each amount of lights indicate a different problem.
What Each Light Means Inside The Red Ring Of Death
1 light – simply means that the general hardware of your console is having simple troubleshooting errors and might need some necessary attention.
2 lights – this happens when your game console over heats due to an extensive amount of game play. This problem is a bit less stressful and can easily be fixed by postponing game play and unplugging the device until the system has had adequate time to cool down. A way to prevent this simple complication is to monitor the amount of usage of the console. I suggest no more than 3 hours of game play over an 8 hour period. This includes DVDs as well, as they tend to overheat your Xbox 360 at an even faster rate because it uses more bandwidth, causing the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) to overheat.
3 lights – this could be a symbol of quite a bit of malfunctions with your game console. The three lights is what most people refer to as “The Red Ring of Death”.
4 lights – this is the one that you freak out the most when you see it, but is the easiest one to fix. When you have four lights that are red you simply have your AV cable loose. The only true science behind that is to check to see if the cable has physical damage, if so, I strongly advise replacement. If the AC cable is in good condition simply check the see if the connection is secure. Restart the console and you should be back to normal.
Repair Methods To Avoid When Fixing The Red Ring of Death
Don’t listen to the You Tube videos that advise you to wrap towels around your console to overheat. That is a very dangerous exercise and can lead to permanent damage to the console. If the purpose of a games“>gaming system is to overheat, the makers of the product would not put specifically placed ventilation holes in the cover of the system to reduce heat. Do not follow the towel advice.
Don’t send your system to the factory because of multiple reasons. First of all, the factory does not fix your system and then send you your system back. They simply ship out refurbished ones as they are fixed, and how do you know that the one that has been shipped to you isn’t in worse condition as the one that you sent them. Secondly, the wait for the return of the system is at minimum 8 weeks, but it could take as long as 16 weeks. The final reason behind why I don’t suggest you sending your console back to the factory is because it will cost you about 200 bucks to have it fixed.
