Battery Care for Your Laptop, iPad or Tablet Computer

The batteries in your laptop, iPad or tablet have a survivor lifespan than the device itself. Over time, your battery will lose its ability to hold a charge, and amount of power that the battery can hold will decrease.

It's important to take care of your battery to get the most life out of it and extend the time before you need to replace it. Here are some tips to help.

Do not let your battery become too hot. If you find that the battery is becoming hot whilst using your computer, it probably is not working properly. When using a laptop, it's best to rest on a hard surface to ensure the fan can circulate properly and keep the battery cool. Check the fan regularly and make sure it does not become clogged with dust.

I always ask customers where they sit when using an overheating laptop – and more often than not, they will sit with the device on their laps while watching TV, or sitting in bed. If you prefer this to sitting at a desk or table, why not invest in a lap desk? These typically have a beanbag-style soft side to rest on your lap, and a hard surface for your computer, allowing air to circulate and keeping it cool.

Also, make sure that your battery is not exposed to extreme temperatures when not in use. Batteries are designed to work best at room temperatures. Do not leave your laptop in the car overnight where it could get very hot or cold – depending on the season! You might not notice the effects until a few weeks after the battery has become too hot or cold. We had a customer once who kept his laptop in the trunk of the car every night so he would not forget to take it to work. After a winter of snow and freezing temperatures, his near-new laptop was in need of a new battery and some tender loving care!

Use your battery. Do not keep your laptop or tablet plugged in all the time as – contrary to what you might expect – the battery will deteriorate faster. Damage is most likely to occur when the battery is at 100% charge and the battery gets frazzled. Some laptops come with a built-in 'maximize battery life' or 'power management' setting. Activate this setting to make a number of small changes to increase the lifetime of the battery, such as stopping the battery charging when it reaches 95%.

It's a good idea to discharge and then recharge your battery completely about once a month. Whenever possible, you should let your battery power run down each time before you recharge it. We also advise that if you are going away on vacation and leaving your laptop behind, you should charge it before you go and let the power drain slowly while you are enjoying your break! Just make sure you leave the computer somewhere not too hot or cold, and do not leave it plugged in.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for charging and maintaining your battery. The manufacturer's website would be a good place to look if you no longer have the original instructions. Only use the charger and power cord supplied by the manufacturer.

Follow these tips and you and your laptop or tablet will have a longer and more successful working life together!
