Red Lights Blinking on Xbox 360 – What They Mean and How to Fix Them

The phrase 'red ring of death' should be familiar to people who have played or play Micrsoft's Xbox 360. But for the inexperienced, the 'red ring of death' is defined by the four lighted arcs on the Xbox console's front that, when they flash red, not green, may mean problem with the gamebox in several forms. That 'something wrong' could range from a simple loose cable connection to total stoppage of operation or equipment crash, as each arc means a different defect.

The common errors and suggested actions

When the second arc blinks continuously, it means the box is overheating, so the best option is to stop playing, switch off the gamebox, unplug it from the power source and allow it to cool for a while. If the third quadrant is blinking, it could be hardware failure, so simply switch off, remove and reinsert all connections but if the blinking returns, take the gamebox to your repair center. Four blinking red lights mean the audio-video cable is not inserted perfectly. Unplug and reinsert it until it 'clicks' into place. If all arcs except one are blinking, you have a general hardware failure and the repair center is your earliest destination.

A general failure is typically boded by freezing screens, lines in the screen, graphics errors or problems with the audio. Only the power switch may function perfectly. General failure may be due to failing one or a number of the components, but it can also mean there is not sufficient power received into the system because of fluctuations in the main line or faults in cable attachments to the console.

An additional problem is scratched disc indicated with fine rings. It was in 2005, and were reported mainly by European users, even though many considered it a trivial glitch. But in 2007 Microsoft got sued in Florida and subsequently in California and Washington by several law firms in class suits accusing Microsoft of 'negligent design and manufacture' of the Xbox 360.

Probable causes and possible solutions

One of the suggested reasons for general failures was fault in the soldering joints. Due to an additional mass of chips that may have absorbed heat when soldering, the lead-free sold might not have properly melted; the soldiers are that structurally weak. Extended use created plenty of heat that could dissolve the solders, allowing the motherboard to warp and flex, unseating it.Some quick solutions include reseating the dislodged units or lowering the heat generated by switching to 65 nm, better done in a Xbox repair center.

The user also has some options to quick-fix the problem. When three lights are flashing in the 'ring of death' yet the power light is green, you better have the unit repaired. Red power supply light that turns orange or goes out when the console is switched on, then plug to another outlet. This is to obviate the particular household outlet which may be problematic. If the problem persists, substitute the power supply unit.

Moving the console while the disc is spinning, wrong disc placement, or faulty disc tray are the common causes of scratched discs. Most often, it is the user who causes the problem.
