There are rules and then there are rules when it comes to horse racing handicapping and making a profit at the track. If you want an easy way to pick winners that isn’t so easy, but if you want an easy way to pick losers, that isn’t so hard. So why not just pick all the probable losers in a race and see if you can come up with one or two good horses to bet.
Here are a few quick and easy ways to pick winners. You can call it the quick and easy horse racing system, if you like. You may already know some of these facts, but how well do you use them? For instance, many people know that most winners of horse races have raced within the last 30-40 days. But how many of those people will make an exception for a horse because they think that its other attributes outweigh this one fact?
Those people soon go broke. Falling in live with a horse or even a bet is the quickest way to go to the poorhouse because you will start making excuses for it. If you find yourself making excuses for horses, better call it a day because horses who need excuses rarely find the winners circle. For instance, you might think that a horse who is coming back from a three month layoff is still a good bet because it raced at a much higher class before it was rested.
That sort of makes sense, but the truth of the matter is that rested or not, most horses need a race or two to get back into racing. It is also true that a trainer will sometimes put a horse such as that into a cheaper race and just give it a workout. He or she may do this several times, get the horse into great shape, then move it up to a higher class and win, laughing all the way to the mutuel windows to cash a handful of tickets.
I recommend that you simply scan your program and apply the following few filters to eliminate a lot of bad bets. It is a quick and easy way to pick winners by eliminating the almost sure losers.
- Eliminate any horse who has not raced at least once in the last 30 days.
-
Eliminate any maiden horse breaking from an inside post position.
-
Eliminate any maiden race with more than one first time starter.
-
Eliminate any female horse going against males.
-
Eliminate any horse going off at odds over 6-1, or in the morning line at 10-1 or more.
-
Eliminate any horse being ridden by a jockey with less than a 9% win average.
You will find most of the winners at the race track are horses who have raced within a month and are not longshots in the morning line. Yes, I know that these rules are not set in stone and there are always exceptions, but chasing those exceptions can cost you unless you want to spend a lot of time and effort to handicap the races. If you want quick and easy handicapping, just use the above rules and only play races where just one or two horses qualify.
