This article is to introduce you to the importance of keeping Windows updated.
Many people I know never update their computer. Although this may keep you out of unexpected problems from the update, it can also lead you to some major security issues. If you're running an operating system which has never seen an update, the chances are the software on the computer is out of date.
When updating Windows, it targets specifically on security updates and updates for the Windows Firewall. Although this does not seem much, it can potentially be the difference between a secure computer and a venerable computer.
Updates applied to Windows Firewall are important as they can help the process of finding and removing viruses. If your firewall has never been updated the chances of picking up a newer virus is rather slim. An update can also improve the speed and performance of Windows, as well as preventing common crashes caused by operating system errors.
Being a frequent user of Windows Update, I would recommend making sure Windows Update is turned on to its recommended setting and manually updated at least twice a month.
How?
Updating Windows is an easy task, as the majority of it is automatic.
Windows Vista and 7 users can find out by pressing 'Start' and typing 'Windows Update'. This will take you directly to the update page. To check for updates, there will either be a button on the center of the screen labeled 'Check for Updates' or a small link to the left side of the window.
With Windows XP, the process is a little more time consuming. Select 'Start' and 'Control Panel'. In the next window select 'Classic View' from the top left of the window. This will change the layout so finding the update tab much easier. Double click on the icon labeled Automatic Updates, and ensure that they are turned on. To update, windows will take you to the Microsoft website using Internet Explorer. Here you can choose either Express (Custom) or Recommended updates.
So there you have it. Valid reasons to keep your operating system up to date. Give it a try and see how many essential updates you have missed out on.
