Considerations of Reverse Osmosis Technology in Water Filtration

Different water filter systems use different technologies in their filtration process. One of the more common technologies employed in water filtration is reverse osmosis. RO is a popular water treatment process to remove bacteria, harmful chlorine, dissolved minerals and other impurities using a membrane.

There are basically two types of reverse osmosis water filters in the market. One is an under-the-sink filter system and the other is the counter top filter system.

Drawbacks

There are some drawbacks to a water filtration system employing reverse osmosis treatment. The semi permeable membrane which is used to filter through the impurities also filters through good minerals like sodium, potassium and calcium which benefit the body. Here, the pH level of the water consumed is changed to become acidic instead of the desired alkaline nature. There is a higher level of hydrogen in the filtered water.

Consuming acidic water is bad for the body as the acid tends to weaken the body system to bring about the development of diseases such as cancer.

There could be minute elements which can not be filtered out by the membrane; This includes lightweight pesticides that pass over. Water is used to push through the minerals and impurities; hence, a lot of water is used and wasted in this reverse osmosis treatment.

It is reported that every clean gallon of water requires about 4 gallons of water which is quite environment unfriendly and time consuming as it takes about 3-4 hours to process that one gallon.

Installation

RO water filter systems can be found in most homes today for the convenience of consumers in their daily usage; especially in the kitchen for cooking purposes. However, there may be other outlets of water that is untreated that is unbeneficial to the consumer such as showers and basins.

A proper installation of the water filter system using reverse osmosis would ensure a provision of safe water supply for consumption despite the taps of most homes offered processed water from the mains. However, many consumers are unsatisfied with the quality of processed water from the mains for some reason or other. It is common to have many homes installing their own filtration system to secure clean water for their own home consumption to enjoy better health.

The best environment for reverse osmosis treatment in any water supply is in remote places where water is known to be unfiltered such as camp sites and remote holiday homes.
