Music at Your Wedding on a Budget

Most people would agree that music is important at a wedding reception – or really any party. It sets the tone, helps mold the ambiance, and definitely a necessary ingredient for a night of dancing. Having music at your wedding can be costly. Whether you have live music or a DJ, you're going to have to spend good money. However, this does not have to preclude someone on a tight budget from having music at their wedding. A little creativity and thinking outside the box can get you far in wedding planning. You do not have to spend tons of money to put on a fabulous wedding-this includes the music budget.

So, if money is tight and there is not a lot in the budget for music entertainment, consider the following possibilities:

• Finding someone you know who is musically inclined. Seek out a family member, friend, or acquaintance who could play, even if it was for a certain amount of time. Anything is better than nothing. A talented friend or loved one might be more than happy to give you their time and skills for an hour or two as their gift to you. Or, you could pay them a nominal fee for their trouble.

• Find a music student. There are many music students starving for experience and a little change. High school music groups, college music groups, music schools, and so forth are great places to look. You can pay these students a sliver of what you've paid a professional, and most of these students are pretty darn talented. Try word of mouth to find somebody, and if you really can not find anyone who knows somebody, try online at a site like Craigslist. Alternately you could contact schools yourself and ask around. It certainly never hurts to ask.

• Find someone you know who DJs. A lot of people have DJ experience on the side, so you may want to ask around and see who does it. A few conversations with friends and family could most definitely lead to somebody who knows somebody who DJs.

* Load your iPod and figure out how to use your venue's sound system. I would say this would be a last resort, or if you're really on a tight budget. Bringing your own music gives you the opportunity to find probably the songs you enjoy and in the order you like them. Definitely make sure you do a trial run to figure out how to use the sound system and figure out any glitches before you have your wedding reception. You may even design someone to be in charge the day of the reception so you do not have to worry about it.
